How to use Filesvo

A real multi-image container

A .ico file is a container holding several complete images, and whatever displays it — Windows Explorer, a browser tab, a taskbar — picks the size closest to what it needs. Filesvo renders each chosen size separately from your source image and embeds them as PNG frames, the compact encoding every modern Windows version (Vista onward) supports.

256 px is the ICO format's maximum frame size and the standard for modern Windows app icons. Non-square images are center-cropped to a square first — icons are square by definition — and the tool tells you when that happened, or when a small source forced upscaling.

Private by design

Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.

How is this different from the Favicon Generator?
The Favicon Generator produces a complete website icon set — a fixed 16/32/48 favicon.ico plus the standard PNG files and HTML tags. This tool produces just one .ico, with any sizes you choose up to 256 px — what you want for Windows apps, shortcuts or a custom favicon.ico.
Which sizes should I pick?
For a website favicon.ico: 16, 32 and 48. For a Windows application icon: 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 covers everything from list views to the large tile display. More sizes mean a larger file, so include only what you need.
Why is 256 the maximum?
The ICO directory stores each frame's width and height in a single byte, with 256 encoded as zero — so 256 px is the largest size the format itself can describe. Anything bigger than an icon should be a PNG instead.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Every frame and the .ico container itself are generated in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
