About GIF and PNG
PNG was literally designed as GIF's successor: same lossless nature, but with millions of colors, real alpha transparency and better compression. For any static image, PNG is simply the better container — usually smaller, never lower quality.
GIF's on/off transparency carries over cleanly (PNG supports that and much more). The conversion is lossless: the PNG stores exactly the pixels the GIF displayed. Animation is the one thing PNG doesn't take over — an animated GIF converts to a still PNG of its first frame.
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
- Is GIF to PNG conversion lossless?
- Yes. The PNG stores exactly the pixels your browser decoded from the GIF — including its transparency. GIF's 256-color limit was baked in when the GIF was made; those colors transfer perfectly.
- What happens to animated GIFs?
- Only the first frame is converted — PNG is a still-image format. Filesvo notes this on every converted file.
- Will the PNG be smaller than the GIF?
- Often, yes — PNG's compression usually beats GIF's older LZW scheme on the same pixels. Filesvo shows the exact size change for every file.
- Do my files leave my device?
- No. The whole conversion runs inside your browser — nothing is uploaded.
