About BMP and PNG
BMP and PNG are both lossless raster formats — the difference is that BMP typically stores pixels raw while PNG compresses them. Converting between them changes nothing about the image itself; it just makes the file web-friendly and far smaller, especially for screenshots, diagrams and graphics with repeated colors.
This is the right conversion when you must not lose any detail — archival scans, technical diagrams, pixel art. For photos where a much smaller file matters more than bit-perfect pixels, BMP to JPG produces far smaller output.
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the conversion really lossless?
- Yes. PNG compression is lossless by design — the PNG contains exactly the pixels your browser decoded from the BMP.
- How much smaller will the PNG be?
- It depends on content: screenshots and graphics often shrink by 80–95%, detailed photos less. Filesvo shows the exact size change per file.
- Does BMP transparency survive?
- The rare 32-bit BMPs that carry an alpha channel keep it if your browser decodes it; standard 24-bit BMPs have no transparency to preserve.
- Do my files leave my device?
- No. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
