About AVIF and PNG

PNG is the safe interchange format: lossless, universally supported, and transparency-capable. Converting AVIF to PNG is the right move when an app, uploader or workflow refuses AVIF and you can't afford any further quality loss from re-compression.

The pixels your browser decodes from the AVIF are stored in the PNG exactly, with the alpha channel intact. Expect noticeably larger files — AVIF is one of the most efficient formats there is, and lossless PNG is not. Decoding uses your browser's built-in AVIF engine (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 16.4+).

Private by design

Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG stores exactly the pixels your browser decoded from the AVIF — no additional quality is lost. Any loss already baked into the AVIF by its original encoder stays, of course; conversion can't restore detail.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. PNG has full alpha support, so transparent and semi-transparent areas come through unchanged.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF uses aggressive lossy compression; PNG is lossless. A 100 KB AVIF photo can easily become a multi-megabyte PNG. That's expected — you're trading size for lossless universality.
What about animated AVIF files?
Only the first frame is converted — PNG is a still-image format.
