Compress PNG Online
Make PNG files dramatically smaller by reducing their color palette — the same technique used by popular PNG optimizers. Transparency is fully preserved, and everything runs on your device.

How to use Filesvo
- Select or drop PNG files, or paste a screenshot from your clipboard.
- Choose the color count — 256 colors is nearly indistinguishable for most screenshots and graphics.
- Click Compress Images and download the smaller PNGs.
How PNG compression works
PNG is a lossless format, so its encoder can't simply be told to 'compress more'. What does work is reducing the number of distinct colors in the image first: with fewer colors, the PNG data becomes far more repetitive and compresses much better. Screenshots, charts, logos and UI graphics often shrink by 40–70% with no visible change at 256 colors.
This color reduction is a lossy step. Filesvo says so plainly: for photographs with smooth gradients, palette reduction causes visible banding — photographic content belongs in JPG or WebP, not a palette-reduced PNG. Alpha transparency is never touched, so transparent areas stay exactly as they were.
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
- Is PNG compression here lossless?
- No — and any tool that claims dramatic PNG savings without quality loss is describing the same palette-reduction technique. Reducing colors is lossy by definition. At 256 colors the difference is invisible for most screenshots and graphics, which is why this method is the industry standard for PNG optimization.
- Is transparency preserved?
- Yes, fully. Only the red, green and blue values are quantized; the alpha channel is copied through untouched, so soft shadows and transparent edges survive exactly.
- Which color count should I pick?
- Start with 256 — it's visually safe for almost all non-photographic images. Drop to 128 or 64 for simple graphics like logos and diagrams when you want maximum savings; check the preview-sized result before committing.
- Should I compress photos as PNG?
- Usually not. Photos have millions of subtle colors, so palette reduction visibly bands them, and even a reduced PNG stays larger than a good JPG or WebP. Use the PNG to JPG or PNG to WebP converter for photographic content.
