Broad support for real-world tarballs

TAR archives in the wild come in several dialects. This reader handles the standard ustar format plus the two common long-filename extensions — GNU longname entries and POSIX pax headers — so tarballs created by Linux tar, macOS tar and most build tools open correctly, long paths included.

Every header block's checksum is verified while reading, so a corrupted or truncated tarball is reported with a clear message instead of producing garbage files. Gzip data is decompressed with the browser's native engine.

Private by design

Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know if my file is compressed?
No — the tool checks the file's actual bytes for the gzip signature and decompresses automatically, whatever the extension says.
Does the folder structure survive?
Full paths are shown in the list, but browsers can only save individual files — so downloads arrive flat, named by the file itself. To preserve a deep folder tree, extract with the tar command instead.
What about .tar.bz2 or .tar.xz?
Not supported — browsers only ship a gzip decompressor natively. For bzip2 or xz tarballs, use a desktop tool.
Is my archive uploaded to a server?
No. The archive is read and decompressed entirely in your browser — its contents never leave your device.
