About GIF and JPG

GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, which made sense in 1989 but wastes space today — a static GIF photo is both lower quality and often larger than a JPG of the same image. Converting static GIFs to JPG modernizes them; converting an animated GIF captures its first frame as a still image.

JPG is a still format, so animation cannot be preserved. If you need the whole animation, keep the GIF or convert it to a video format instead — a first-frame JPG is for thumbnails, previews and platforms that reject GIF uploads.

Transparency handling

JPG doesn't support transparency. GIF's transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).

Private by design

Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted — JPG can't hold animation. Filesvo notes this on every converted file so there's no surprise.
Will quality improve by converting to JPG?
No — conversion can't restore colors GIF already discarded. The 256-color limitation is baked into the source; the JPG simply stores those same pixels in a more compatible, usually smaller file.
Should I pick JPG or PNG as the target?
PNG for graphics, logos and anything needing transparency; JPG for photographic content where small file size matters. GIF's hard-edged, palette-based images often look cleaner as PNG.
Are my GIFs uploaded?
No. Decoding and conversion happen inside your browser. Filesvo never receives your files.
