Choosing a JPG quality level
JPG compression works by discarding image detail the eye is least likely to notice. At 75–85% quality most photos look essentially identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Below about 60%, compression artifacts — blockiness and halos around edges — start to become visible.
Compressing an already-compressed JPG re-encodes it, which always costs a little additional quality even at high settings. For repeated editing, keep a master copy in a lossless format and compress only the final version you share.
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
- What quality setting should I use?
- 75% is a solid default for photos being uploaded or emailed. Use 85–95% when quality matters more than size, and 50–70% only when hitting a strict size limit is the priority. The exact size change is shown per file, so you can experiment freely.
- Why didn't my JPG get much smaller?
- It was probably already compressed to a similar or lower quality level. Re-compressing can't shrink what's already tight — when the result isn't smaller, Filesvo tells you to keep the original rather than pretending there was a saving.
- Does compressing a JPG twice ruin it?
- Each re-encode loses a little detail, and losses accumulate. One extra compression pass at 75%+ is rarely noticeable; a dozen passes will be. Whenever possible, compress once from the best copy you have.
- Is this JPG compressor private?
- Yes. Compression runs entirely in your browser — your photos are never uploaded, stored or seen by Filesvo.
