About AVIF and JPG
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses impressively well, but plenty of software still can't open it — older editors, office suites, some CMS uploaders and many printing services expect JPG. Converting to JPG trades some file-size efficiency for universal compatibility.
Filesvo uses the AVIF decoder built into current browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari 16.4 or newer). If your browser can display AVIF images, it can convert them here — entirely on your device.
Transparency handling
JPG doesn't support transparency. If your AVIF has transparent areas, they're filled with the background color you choose (white by default).
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser using the browser's built-in image APIs and are not uploaded to Filesvo. Nothing is stored on our servers, because nothing ever reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
- Why won't my AVIF file convert?
- The most common cause is an older browser without AVIF support — Safari before 16.4, for example. Update your browser and try again; if the file still fails, it may be damaged or use an unusual AVIF profile.
- What about animated AVIF files?
- JPG is a still-image format, so only the first frame of an animated AVIF is converted.
- Will converting lose quality?
- Both AVIF and JPG are lossy formats, so a conversion re-encodes the image. At the default 90% quality the difference is rarely visible, but the JPG file will usually be larger than the AVIF was — that's the price of compatibility.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No. Decoding and encoding both happen inside your browser. Filesvo never receives your files.
